ORIGINAL POST
Considering that the bids for SKBC 2010 won't be reviewed until June of 2009, and SKBC doesn't normally happen until April or May of the following year (2010), I was kicking around the idea of hosting a similar local day event. Ideally it would be held at a normal park that is centrally located. Offhand I would offer up Ashen Spire to host the event (likely on a Saturday), as we have plenty of space, shade and a large picnic area complete with grills.
Looking around, we have a number of talented fighters who excel in a variety of areas. These individuals are more than capable of helping to spread their knowledge to others, and many already do so on a regular basis. This day event would be more of a tutorial than a "fighter practice" of sorts, utilizing the aforementioned individuals as instructors. A selection of classes would be offered, with each instructor heading up a class that ran throughout the day and would have new groups rotated in every hour or so. An example of classes would be:
- Single Sword
- Introductory Flourentine
- Advanced Flourentine
- Introductory Sword and Shield
- Advanced Sword and Shield
- Introductory Polearm
-Advanced Polearm
- Team Fighting
In order to make this event work, we would need a number of volunteer instructors who were skilled in one or more of the listed areas (list is subject to change). The schedule for the day may look something like this:
11AM - 12PM Sign in and ditching
12PM - 1PM First class
1PM - 2PM Second class
2PM - 3PM Lunch break and ditching
3PM - 4PM Third class
4PM - 5PM Fourth class
5PM - 6PM Ditching and pack up
An attendee may elect to take up to four classes. It stands to reason that any more classes than that, and the overall length of each class would have to be reduced to fit them all in. This would potentially detract from the content of each individual class. Also, the course restriction lends itself to directing attendees to classes that they would most closely benefit from. It is advised that attendees bring their own equipment appropriate to the classes that they will be taking, as there is no assurance that loaner equipment will be available.
I believe that this event would greatly benefit Westmarch's fighters, as it provides them an opportunity to ask questions, work on techniques both basic and advanced, and attempt to implement them in a setting that is established for this purpose. Additionally, the only cost(s) involved in running this event would be the meal charge, which would be minimal as normal ($3-$5). Any resulting margin would be contributed to Westmarch.
Is this an event that people would be interested in attending, either as an instructor or as a student? If so, is there an ideal month in which you feel this event would be best to run? Additional feedback is appreciated!
